Media literacy is the ability to understand
information passed through various
media channels and to access
various forms of messaging
while analyzing, evaluating, and
communicating those messages.
Those with such media literacy
skills can interpret, evaluate,
analyze, and produce print and
broadcast media. Media literacy is
not simply understanding technology, it
understanding the media industry, patterns of general
media content, and the knowledge structures associated with the media’s effects.
Media literacy is more than just a cognitive skill. It requires aesthetic, emotional,
and moral development. Communicators with good media literacy should be able to
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the way media is used in their personal
lives and in the public. They should also be able to demonstrate knowledge and
understanding of the complex relationships between the audience and the content put
out on various forms of media. This knowledge and understanding should also be of
the content being produced in social and cultural contexts and of the commercial nature
of the media in regards to communicating with a particular audience.
Media literacy includes a variety of functions, including reading, writing, speaking,
using computers, deciphering visual representations of information, and even decoding
musical presentations.
