is being developed. To develop any new
drug, it first goes through a process called
discovery, which refers to the stage from
planning to its first clinical trials. Then, it
goes through a nonclinical phase in which
experiments are conducted on animals to
identify toxicity. Afterwards, if the drug is
non-toxic and stable in animals, doctors will
conduct clinical experiments on humans.
After passing through each step of this
process, the vaccine must be certified by the
FDA and distributed to the market on a small
scale to check if there are any problems.
Finally, distributors are able to start mass
production if there are no problems in any of
these steps. This seemingly simple process
requires at least ten years to complete.
Fortunately, however, the world is working
to develop treatments quickly, and many
people and countries are investing money
in vaccine development. However, scientists
have estimated that it will take at least three
years to develop and distribute a safe and
effective vaccine. That is why we have to
wear masks when going out, refrain from
touching our eyes, nose, or mouth with
our unwashed hands, and wash our hands
more frequently to prevent COVID-19 from
spreading.
