Have you heard the term Femicide?

COVID-19 is known for causing many deaths, but there are a
number of deaths for other terrible reasons besides than dying
from disease. Our 21st century global community is mostly
pursuing gender equality first and foremost. However, in many
countries, including Korea, tragic incidents of women being
killed by lovers, cohabitants, and spouses just because of
gender are occurring. It is the victims of this femicide that lead
us to a tragedy other than COVID-19. Femicide is a combination
of “female” and the suffix “-cide.”
Why is COVID-19 mentioned in this phenomenon? This is
because the number of incidents found in 2020 was the highest
in the last decade. Experts say that the reason is because the
relatively weak women may have been subject to increased
violence due to stress, fatigue, and anxiety caused by the
prolonged COVID-19 crisis.
