was wandering through life. I had a talk with him because he had a natural aptitude for
learning and a good mind. I gave him a lot of advice. After our talk and some confiding
in his friends, he made up his mind about what he should do.
Finally, he found his dream of becoming a counselor to help others. He still played the
drums, but he studied very hard to become a counselor. He entered the department
of psychology at Seoul National University. That’s why he is the most memorable
student for me. It’s not that he went to Seoul National University but that he converted
his experience into a career, knowing that he was progressing and continuing in his
endeavors. In that sense, I just wanted to praise him so much. I would’ve praised him
even if he didn’t get into a university.
Q. If you were to teach a subject besides Korean, which subject would you want to
teach?
English and math. I want to teach language arts, English, and math (laughter). Math
has that charm when you get the correct answer. It was also my worst subject and a
difficult part of my life, so I studied it hard and taught it to others. I still often take math
lectures on EBS. I solve the math problems though I’m wrong at times (laughter). I like
English as much as language arts. I think I would want to teach a foreign language
like Japanese and French because of the charm of those other languages.
Q. What was the most meaningful thing about working at Myeongshin Girls' High
School?
I can't figure that out right now... Ah! I'm a homeroom teacher, but I can’t see my
students a lot because of COVID-19. I was so nervous and excited every time I saw
them as if I was meeting them for the first time. I was very ready to love all nineteen
of my students the best that I could as a homeroom teacher. One teacher saw me
and said I was excited and interesting. They told me something that turned out to
be a wise saying in my life. The teacher told me not to try to love all nineteen or one
hundred students, but to treat them with a mind that never hated a single student.
That's the most memorable thing I've ever heard while working as a teacher, so I try
to treat my students with that in mind. I treat them with that in mind and try not to hate
one student, not to mess up, and not to give up. Did my mind change a little? Actually,
I didn't have a favorite student, but I did think that I should help all of them not to fall
behind and not to lose interest instead of trying loving them all evenly. I got a new
attitude on teaching.
