relationship worth about $85 billion a year. Japan, in particular, holds considerable power as a main supplier
of essential raw materials and components to Korea’s high-tech economic machine. Any serious attempt
to break trade ties “would be a disaster,” said Rory Green, an economist at the London-based T.S. Lombard
who specializes in Korea and China. Also, a representative of the Korean company Sejin Tech said, "Japan’
s recent moves have woken us up and created a movement that is teaching us that Korean companies,
including mine, rely too much on Japan’s industrial technologies... Perhaps Korean manufacturers have
to try harder to develop our own Korea-made products to replace imports from Japan... But businesses,
especially small and medium-sized businesses, have not prepared for situations such as the political
struggle between Korea and Japan.”
Therefore, there are voices expressing concern with the boycott or opposing it altogether. Some point
out that emotional responses aren’t helpful or say the boycott may be helpful only for a while. They argue
that people need to think about whether it really helps us. Their ideas oppose those of the supporters
of the boycott. Some say that Japan deserves to be criticized; but, if the boycott were to be drawn
out2), Korea can develop hostile relations with Japan. They also argue that the standard of what makes a
company wholly Japanese isn't evident.
Others criticize the boycott because it will only aggravate3) hostility, triggering a backlash4) from Japan.
It might eventually hurt the Korean economy as the withdrawal of Japanese companies decrease Korean
jobs or harm our nation's tourism industry. Despite these concerns, the boycott of Japanese products,
relying on SNS to actively display and publicize citizens’ thoughts and actions, is not expected to stop
quickly.
