Japan announced that it would tighten restrictions on the sales of three chemicals used to make high-
end computer chips and digital displays to Korea. Japan formally removed Korea from its economic “white
list,” abandoning the trust established between the two Asian economic powers. Koreans have shown
their anger with their wallets. Korean consumers have responded by starting a boycott and setting up
social media accounts that suggest alternatives to Japanese products, and they say they have no plans
to stop. Koreans are being encouraged to shop at
SPAO instead of Uniqlo. They’re also urging people
to consider Able C&C Co.’s Missha beauty products
instead of those sold by Shiseido Co. and beers
from Hite Jinro Co. instead of those from Asahi
Group Holdings Ltd.
But some say we will need more than new rules
and consumer boycotts to reconcile the two
allies. The two countries have become deeply
