Democratic strife
in Thailand
10215 Jang, Yejin
Citizens seeking freedom from dictatorship may resist that cruel dictatorship.
Thailand has been living uneasily since the military coup d’état on May 22nd, 2014.
Thailand launched a movement for democracy in 2020 just as South Korea did in
June of 1987. Six years of suppression, lasting from 2014 to 2020, have silenced
citizens, controlled their behavior, and had an incredible influence on their lives.
Under this control, a constitution enacted by the strong military presence in 2017
gave the military government more
chances to abuse their power over
the Thai people instead of giving them
freedom and basic rights.
This corrupt system is being used as
a weapon to support the ruling class
and make life worse for the subjugated
class. Since 2014, the Thai military
has also shown the desire to scrap
its health insurance policy and use
the money to buy weapons. For these
reasons, Thailand has become a
country where you have to lose a lot of
things to express your thoughts. When
many brave students and activists
spoke out about their rights and voiced
criticism about the military, the results
were truly disastrous.
