division to Impressionism. They were inspired by Michel Eugene Chevreul, a French
chemist and color theorist who wrote De La Loi du Contraste Simultane des Couleurs
(the law of simultaneous contrast of colors), and Charles Blanc, a French art critic. Neo-
Impressionists devised systems of pure-color juxtaposition, such as pointillism, to avoid
the dull, dark, and murky colors of Impressionist paintings. They juxtaposed the small
colored dots regularly. As a result, from a distance, the dots come together as a whole,
displaying maximum brilliance and conformity to actual light conditions. The light from the
adjoining two colors are mixed subtractively in your eyes, and you can see the third color.

Pointillism was started by Georges Pierre Seurat, and Paul Signac spread it all over
Europe in only 20 years. Impressionism influenced Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gaugin, and
Camille Pissarro for a time. It also influenced 20th century’s cubism and futurists in their
                   pursuit of science and theory.
