According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sharon Choi
and Hyung-sik Kang, director of the ministry's overseas
safety management planning bureau, became the 12th
winners of the video diplomatic personnel award by the Seoul
International Forum. An award ceremony will be held with a
congratulatory speech by Foreign Minister Kyung-wha Kang
on Sunday.
The Video Diplomat Award is given out at the Seoul
International Forum every year to government and civilian
figures who strive to enhance national interests and promote
the national image abroad as diplomats. SM Entertainment's
general producer Lee Soo-man was the first cultural figure
to win the award in 2016, and in 2019, Park Hang-seo, head
coach of the Vietnamese national soccer team, was also
given the award.
Sharon Choi, known as Bong Joon-ho's interpreter, is
considered the decisive MVP of the Korean-speaking film
release of “Parasite” and Bong's entire Oscar campaign that
lasted from last year to early this year.
Sharon Choi, who is not a professional interpreter, served
as a preliminary director during the preparation for the film,
and since she is a movie star, she delivered the cinematic
nuance that Bong wanted to convey and that professional
interpreters would not have conveyed as well as she had.
Among American netizens, there were comments saying,
“The interpreter seems to be sharing her brain with director
Bong Joon-ho,” and she received as much attention from the
U.S. media as Bong Joon-ho did.
