The Fourth Industrial Revolution is the next-generation industrial revolution in which advanced
information and communication technologies fuse with the economy and society, bringing innovative
changes. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is commonly called a “chimney-free industry” with the belief
that energy use will be drastically reduced. But can we really say it's an chimney-free industry? Strictly
speaking, this is not a perfectly correct claim. For example, even if AI replaces human work, the total
amount of energy used could increase. This article was written to correct the misunderstanding of the
Fourth Industrial Revolution in regards to its use of energy.

So how does the Fourth Industrial Revolution function exactly? Intelligent information technologies
such as AI, IoT, cloud computing, and big data are being integrated1) into existing industries and services
or combined with new technologies in various fields such as 3D printing, robotics, and biotechnology
to connect all products and services to networks and smart products. Like this, the Fourth Industrial
Revolution features hyperconnectivity2) and superintelligence. That is why internet data centers are an
integral part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, these data centers also have a huge energy
demand. For example, the amount of CO2 that Naver's data center emits only in regards to server
