5G is 20 Times Faster than LTE!
Jung Ah-hyeon
You may have heard of the development of 5G these days. 5G, which is a mobile communication
service with a maximum speed of 20Gbps, is a mobile communication technology about 20 times faster
than LTE, the fourth-generation of mobile communication, with 100 times more processing capacity.
Through its ultra-low latency1) and ultra-connectivity2), it can be used with technologies such as virtual
reality, autonomous driving, and the ever-expanding internet,
key technologies of the fourth
industrial revolution.
5G is a technology that can
connect all electronic devices
beyond the realm of current
mobile phones. There is fierce
competition among countries
around the world for 5G
technology development and
market dominance. Korea drew
attention to its developments
when it used 5G technology
at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. In particular, they
implemented time slice technology for figure skating, short-track speed skating, and ice hockey. Time
slice, which captures instantaneous images from various angles, is a technology that enabled the real-time
transmission of images taken by multiple cameras to 5G devices, though it required high-speed and high-
capacity telecommunication.
So what about the current 5G outlook? The key word that shows up with the highest frequency
when searching 5G prospects is smartphone, followed by market, technology, service, and commercial
in that order. First of all, smartphones hold the greatest interest in regards to 5G. Not only are mobile
network operators mentioned when talking about 5G, but also automobile, manufacturing, healthcare,
transportation, agriculture, security safety, the media, energy, distribution, and finance companies are all
major players.
