The Problems of
“Me Too” in School
Lee Yu-kyung
It's been over a year since our society spoke
openly about different types of sexual violence
through SNS platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
The #metoo movement in schools, like the original
#metoo movement, is a movement against sexual
harassment1) and sexual assault2).

A rally called the School Me Too was held in
Seoul on December 6th of last year. Students attending a girls' high school in Songpa-gu, Seoul began to
speak out, complaining about sexual harassment from teachers. On December 4th of last year, they posted
hand-written posters around the school titled, "Demanding an apology and the punishment of teachers
who perpetrated3) sexual harassment crimes."
The school made their staff remove these handwritten posters. The students put up more posters the
next day, but these were also removed. According to the handwritten posters, teachers at the school
often judged students according to their appearance or even molested4) their students. As interest in the
School Me Too rally increased, another rally was held in Gwanghwamun Square on November 3rd last year
on Student's Day. About 30 groups including groups of middle and high school girls attended the rally with
the message that there was "no school for female students" and voiced complaints about sexual violence
in schools.
They broke a blackboard in protest of sexual harassment and sex discrimination and then marched to
the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education after the rally and posted a banner with the movement motto
