Director Bong Joon-ho's Parasite1) recently won the
Palme d'Or2) at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival. It received the
highest score among the films screened at the competition.
Also, this film was selected as a finalist in three different
categories: best foreign language film, best screenplay, and
best director at the 77th Golden Globe Awards on December
9th. So why did the film win such big renown at a global film
festivals?
Before we answer this question, let’s give a summary of
the plot of the story. Ki-taek's family was poor because
they were all unemployed, but the relationships among
family members were still good. His eldest son, Ki-woo,
then became a tutor at the wealthy Dr. Park’s house with
the help of his friend. Through various tricks that Ki-woo
and his family came up with, his father, mother(Chung-
sook), and younger sister(Ki-jeong) also begin work at Dr.
Park’s house. With all family members employed and their
perfect tricks seeming to be successful, Ki-taek's family enjoys a night of drinking in the empty house
when the Park family goes on a camping trip. Suddenly, the bell rings, and Chung-sook opens the door.
It is none other than the who was robbed of her job by Chung-sook., Moon-gwang. The woman, looking
very distraught, quickly enters the house and goes into a secret basement connected to the kitchen
pantry. Surprising Ki-taek’s whole family, Moon-gwang’s husband was living down there, having hid himself
from debtors years before. But before Ki-taeks family can kick them out, Moon-gwang and her husband
threaten to reveal the secret of Ki-taek's family. The ending then brings unexpected twists and turns that
the viewer should see for themselves.
