A Review of the Drama 'Pinocchio'

This main character of this drama is In-ha Choi
(played by Shin-hye Park) who lives with Pinocchio
syndrome which causes her to hiccup1) when she lies.
There is also Dal-po Choi (played by Jong-seok Lee),
a reporter who conceals his identity because of the
his prosecuted father. In this drama, the case, the
Ho-myung incident, causes Dal-po's father to be treated as a criminal due to the media's
provocative2) reports, and his family suffers from the indiscriminate public's criticism. This
drama criticizes the media and journalists who write interest-oriented articles regardless of
if the information is true or not and are not held responsible for the terrible consequences.
Also, this drama criticizes the public who can write malicious comments3) so easily.
Through this drama, viewers can understand the ripple effect4) of media reports. In this
drama, one family suffers from the news manipulation5) of Cha-ok Song. There have been
similar cases that have happened in Korea.
One case in point is Young-ae Lee's Hwangto-pak case from 2008. People argued that
Hwangto industry collapsed due to secondary media damage after the first damage had
already been caused by the factory's failure to operate. Looking at these examples, the
public should realize the seriousness of how the media's inaccurate reports can cause more
damage to others. Through this drama's criticism of high-ranking media officials and their
news manipulation, the general public can better understand the consequences of such
manipulation and the importance of honest reporting.
