Hot Weather
Last summer, Koreans had a hard time in the hot weather.
The number of deaths from the heatwave is estimated at over
40 people, and the number of people with high fever is 3, 438.
The news of a child who had been trapped in a bus in a hot
weather had been reported, raising public sadness.
The Korea Meteorological Administration1)(KMA) uses a
warning light when the daytime maximum temperature is over
29 degrees Celsius, and uses a worse warnig light when the
maximum daytime temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius for
more than 2 days. This summer, the record heat that came in
111 years has caused the high temperatures in Daegu and some
areas to exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
If so, what causes the hot weather? Experts analyzed
that the reason for the occurrence of the hot weather was
the phenomenon of "heat breeze." This is a meteorological
phenomenon2) in which hot air is trapped on the ground while
forming a hemispherical dome in a state of high pressure
developed in high air. The phenomena of the hot weather were
not only in Korea but also in the whole world. The main cause
is greenhouse gas and fossil fuel. The entire world has been
working to protect the world through the Paris Agreement and
the Kyoto Protocol. However, carbon emissions have become
ruthless as the United States, which recently has a high level of fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse
gas emissions, withdrew from the Paris treaty. This leads to an increase in the amount of greenhouse
gases in the Earth and rising in the average surface temperature of the Earth, resulting in abnormal
weather. In order to prevent serious damage all over the world, the attention and cooperation of each
country is needed.
The health of the people also has a red alarm in the lasting heat. To explain how to maintain health in
a hot weather, our body has a constant temperature to maintain a constant body temperature, so if the
body temperature suddenly changes, the body organs work to return the body temperature to the proper
level. However, if you are exposed to prolonged heat, your body temperature control system will not
work properly, leading to various types of heat illnesses such as fever, and heat stroke. To cope with hot
weather, we should drink a lot of water, refrain from going out when the concentration of ultraviolet rays
is high, refrain from outdoor activities, and not work under long hours of sunshine. It is also a good idea
to keep your body constantly wiped down instead of relying on air conditioners and fan to lower body
temperature.
