High School Credit System in

Myeong-Shin Girls’ High School?

Myeong-shin Girls' High School is to be one of the pioneers of running a high school credit system. The
school is going to change to a school credit system in 2020, abandoning the present system. Then what
is a high school credit system? It is a system in which students can choose and complete various subjects
according to their career choice. When their cumulative credits fulfill the graduation criteria, the school
will allow them to graduate. After the Education Ministry inspects the policy being run by these pioneering
high schools, including Myeong-shin Girls’ High School, it will then start to introduce the system to high
schools around the country in 2022. In 2025, they plan to regularize the system to make it more effective.

In 1933, John Dewey, American philosopher and educator, began researching student-centered
education. According to John Dewey’s research, the new education method didn’t decrease the foundation
of academic abilities and didn’t interfere with learning. John Dewey said, “If we teach today’s students as
we taught yesterday’s, we rob them of tomorrow,” and “Give the pupils something to do, not something to
learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results.” After the results
of his research were announced, a shift to student-centered education could be seen worldwide. There are
now many countries running some form of a credit system: America, England, Finland, Canada, Australia,
Singapore, Hong Kong, and others.
