Gyungwoongung and declared himself Dae Han, the
emperor of Josun. Then the area developed into a
true palace fit for an emperor. But, after Go Jong
died, the palace shrank and the name was changed
to Deoksugung from Gyungwoongung. After learning
all about the difficult history of the palace, the 2nd
grade students finished their tour and moved to
enjoy a walk along Cheonggyecheon.
Cheonggyecheon is a stream that flows along the
border of Jongno-gu and Jung-gu in Seoul. Now, let's
find out a little more about its history.
First, Cheonggyecheon of the Joseon Dynasty was
very different from the present Cheonggyecheon.
At that time, it was a natural stream, flooding when
it rained and usually thought of as unclean because
of the sewage. From the time when Taejong ordered
it to be reconstructed, Cheonggyecheon has been
constantly changing into the stream we know today. In particular, from 1960 to 2005, many bridges
including Gwanggyo, Zhugyo, and Buddlegyo have been built over the stream.
Then how is Cheonggyecheon viewed these days? First, various festivals are often held there. For
example, there is a night market held around Gwangtonggyo where vendors sell flowers and handmade
accessories. Visitors can eat many kinds of food, and there are many beautiful places to make memories
with families or lovers. In addition to this night market, Seoul Lantern Festival runs from Cheonggye Plaza
to Supyogyo. The festival is held in November and is Seoul's representative winter festival that lights up
Cheonggyecheon with different colors and concepts each year. Festival events include lantern-making,
floating lanterns on the river, and other fun activities.
Make happy memories in Cheonggyecheon with beloved friends and lovers by taking part in the various
events that are held every year!
