Did you hear of the incident of the
Hungarian cruise ship sinking? Around
9 PM on May 29th, 2019 (Hungarian
local time), the cruise ship Hubbleani
(mermaid in Hungarian) sank into the
Danube river in the Hungarian capital
of Budapest with 33 Koreans and 2
Hungarian crew members on board.
The incident occurred at the most
beautiful stop of the 40-50 minute
trip, the Margit Bridge near the Houses
of Parliament1). At the time of the
accident, there were many larger ships
coming and going on the Danube
besides just cruise ships. The accident occurred when the Swiss national cruise ship Viking Sigyn
bumped into the Hubbleani on its way back to the dock. Rescued passengers, in particular, said that
the Viking Sigyn did not rescue them after bumping into their ship.

The incident killed 27 of the 35 onboard (30 Korean tourists, 1 travel agent, 1 guide, 1 photographer
and 2 crew members), 7 were rescued, and one Korean was reported missed. Many Korean passengers
have been travelling to major countries in Eastern Europe through package tours from domestic
travel agencies.

Meanwhile, President Jae-in Moon urged the Hungarian government to use all available resources
to rescue the Koreans from the Danube River in Budapest that day and quickly dispatched Korea’s
own response team. The government set up a foreign countermeasures headquarters2) headed by the
Foreign Minister, Kyung-hwa Kang. The government then assigned 37 people to the speedy response
team, adding personnel from the Navy, the Marine Police, the National Intelligence Service, the Korea
